The innovative impregnation with photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is a process in which a substance (the catalyst) accelerates a chemical reaction under the influence of light without being consumed itself. This process uses the energy of light (usually UV light) to initiate a reaction that would only take place slowly or not at all without light. It was first intensively studied and applied in Japan in the 1970s. 

 

In surface impregnation, it helps to decompose pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are mainly caused by traffic and industry, and organic material such as green deposits. Nitrogen oxide caused by vehicles is harmful to humans and provides a better basis for algae growth, for example. Duoprotection Impregnation contains the catalyst for active protection of the surface and creates a chemical bond with the substrate after application.

 

When sunlight (UV light) hits the protected substrate, the photocatalytic process is activated. This decomposes organic substances and converts dangerous NOx into harmless salt, thereby purifying the air. Decomposition residues are simply washed away the next time it rains.

WHY USE DUOPROTECTION?

The Duoprotection impregnation achieves a double effect: it protects mineral surfaces independently from soiling and at the same time improves the air quality. 

 

The effect lasts for up to 12 years without the impregnation wearing off. This means that the treated surfaces require significantly less cleaning and no regular refreshing. Your surface stays clean for a long time and the costs are low.

Photocatalysis breaks down organic material, e.g. green deposits: Green deposits and nitrogen oxide (NOx) are broken down and converted into harmless nitrate, which significantly improves air quality. This is particularly important in urban areas, which often have high NOx concentrations and are affected by air pollution. NOx is 300 times more harmful to humans than CO2 and has a negative effect on the respiratory tract, bronchi and lung function, which poses a major health risk and can be carcinogenic, especially in urban areas with high traffic volumes.

An area of just 50 m² protected with Duoprotect purifies the ambient air of approx. 0.5 kg of nitrogen oxide per year. This corresponds to the nitrogen emissions of a car driving 7,500 kilometers. Simply offset your nitrogen emissions with Duoprotect.

Traditional impregnations usually only provide a protective layer that keeps dirt, water and other contaminants away from the surface. These impregnations do not provide long-term reduction of pollutants and are often susceptible to abrasion or wear and tear, so they need to be renewed regularly.

APPLICATION DUOPROTECT
For use on all absorbent and open-pored mineral substrates as well as asphalt. Best suited for concrete substrates such as concrete block & concrete tiles, sandstone, granite, limestone and quartzite.

Apply the product pure to the completely cleaned and dried surface. We recommend the universal cleaner MUB101 for cleaning of general dirt and the algae moss remover AME112 for green deposits. The impregnation can be applied using suitable tools such as cotton strips, rollers or spraying equipment. Ensure that the product is evenly distributed over the surface. You can protect approx. 40-50 m² of surface with 5 liters. After impregnation, the surface must dry for at least 4 hours and be protected from all stresses.
We recommend application at temperatures above 10°C.  Used tools should be cleaned well with water after application.
After use, store residues in the original container, closed and protected from light. Do not store below 5°C.

Duo Protection impregnation DSI203 is a frost-proof impregnation for absorbent and open-pored mineral substrates with a durability of up to 12 years. Self-active ingredients use UV light to break down organic substances such as green deposits and neutralise nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the air, which is dangerous to humans. The product is transparent after application and does not change the appearance of the surface. With 5 litres you can protect approx. 40-50 m² of surface.

The Duoprotect impregnation automatically breaks down nitrogen oxide (NOx), ozone and organic material such as green deposits by using photocatalysis. 

Pets should be kept away from the treated area during the impregnation process. As soon as the surface is dry after approx. 4 to 8 hours, people and animals can walk on the surface again.

Between 40 and 50 m² of surface can be impregnated with 5 liters of Duoprotect impregnation. Duoprotect can be used on all stone substrates that are porous and absorbent, e.g. concrete stone, concrete tiles, sandstone, limestone, granite, quartz and asphalt: Concrete stone, concrete tiles, sandstone, limestone, granite and quartzite as well as asphalt.

The special ingredients in the impregnation activate photocatalysis and thus the degradation of green deposits not only in direct sunlight but also in diffuse light conditions. 

The catalyst activates oxygen and the nitrogen oxides oxidize to nitrate. Moisture or water (rain and/or dew) washes away the easily soluble substances and the harmless nitrate and returns them to the wastewater. Pollutants are broken down faster and more efficiently than natural atmospheric decomposition allows. This rules out an “additional” environmental hazard, as proven by extensive studies.

No, photocatalysis works as long as the impregnation is bonded to the stone substrate. The catalyst in the impregnation is not consumed. The process remains active as long as the crystals are supplied with energy by light.
